Everybody has a story to tell!

The Individuality Project has been working with people in the Sedgemoor area to create themselves as ceramic figures, which have formed walking trails and been exhibited across the county. But what started with ceramic figures soon blossomed into something deeper: a platform for voices.

The project introduced creative writing workshops and this led them to create a book of writing from the community. People were eager to share their stories, their humour, their heartbreak, and their joy. Come and hear the editors, Rachel Bunce and Bridget Hemmings, talk about the background of the project, their experience of guiding people in sharing their stories, and the book that has brought it all together.

The book is a celebration—not just of individuality, but of courage and connection.

“This is a treasure chest of deeply personal writing – memories, thoughts, feelings and reflections. Each piece is as unique and individual as its writer, yet the whole work is united in a glorious, shared humanity. A wonderful book!”

Bridget Hemmings was born and brought up on a farm in Oxfordshire but moved to Somerset over 35 years ago. She has led the Individuality Project from the beginning (2022), bringing over 1,000 people together, of all ages and backgrounds in Sedgemoor to explore identity through clay and writing. Bridget has an Education degree and has spent nearly 30 years in education, 11 years of which were as a Primary School Headteacher. This was followed by 10 years as a ceramicist, which she is still doing now. She believes that these experiences together have helped her to run this wonderful project.

Rachel Bunce has always lived in Somerset and was brought up on a farm in Goathurst. She specialised in English within her education degree before teaching older children in primary school. Her love of the written and spoken word led her into this project. She runs weekly adult writing groups from the ‘Blue House Kitchen’ and has wonderful skills in helping writers and novice writers to ‘have a go’. She is an experienced writer who passionately believes that everyone has a story to tell.
