Somerset is packed with talent! Come along and hear from emerging writers from Burnham and beyond. This session is an informal chat between our local writers as they discuss what they’re working on, the things that inspire them and the challenges of putting pen to page.
In this session, meet:
Pam Earnshaw – Pam Earnshaw got involved with writing while volunteering on the Somerset levels. She collaborated with her colleague, Sally Mills, to produce a book about a bittern. The book is a story written for children as the Avalon Marshes were being developed, to bring back this iconic bird It is packed with plenty of facts for adults to learn about the bittern too!
Fenja Hill – Fenja is the self-published author of Nightwriting, a multi-genre collection of stories combining humour with a dark edge. Her poem “Travelling in the Back Seat” was shortlisted for the 2022 Yeovil Literary Prize and her short story “Taking Notes” took second place at the 2023 Wells Literary Festival. Her next collection of short stories is due out soon.
Sally Mills – Sally Mills was born in 1967 and raised in rural North Wales, where she was inspired by her bucolic surroundings leading to a fascination with the natural world. A healthy obsession with birds dominated her life and has continued to do so to this day. Following a career in conservation, Sally earned the chance to manage a tropical island nature reserve in Seychelles, together with partner Melvyn.
Michael Turner – Michael has travelled the world following the path of Sir Francis Drake. He has lectured to the Royal Geographical Society and the Ashridge Circle in Eastbourne (Britain’s largest lecturing organisation). In 2017, Michael gave six Drake lectures whilst in Drake’s wake on a cruise ship in the Pacific Ocean and the West Indies. Micahel has also published a book on Gene Pitney.
