Somerset is packed with talent! Come along and hear from emerging writers from Burnham and beyond. This session is an informal chat between our local writers as they discuss what they’re working on, the things that inspire them and the challenges of putting pen to page.

In this session, meet:

James Marshall – James is the author of one non-fiction book and over 200 magazine and journal articles about sports coaching. He started writing fiction in 2018 and won Pen to Print’s ‘Short story of the year’ competition in 2022, then was shortlisted for their 2023 Book Challenge, where he received a year’s mentorship which led to his first novel being published. “The Poster” is a coming-of-age story about two siblings in a dystopian Plymouth struggling to reunite with their family in wartime. It is available to buy on Amazon.

B J Mears – Born in Cornwall, Ben first began writing high fantasy as a hobbyist, later working on a series of early-medieval whodunits before self-publishing the young adult Tyler May series. In addition to his role as an author, Ben is a published songwriter, a published illustrator and an award-winning graphic designer. He lives in Clevedon (UK) with his wife and daughters. His three daughters were partly responsible for inspiring the main characters of the Tyler May series.

Paula Wilkes – After years of working as a Senior Manager for a major bank, Paula started writing later in life, after being asked by one of her Granddaughters if she could have a book featuring herself for Christmas. Paula has now published 10 books including 4 children’s books, 5 fiction books and 1 book aimed at helping those whose memories aren’t as clear as they used to be. Paula was born in Somerset and after living for a few years in Spain moved to Burnham-On-Sea two years ago.
