Join local writer Michael Turner for a voyage across the world, following in the footsteps of Sir Francis Drake. Michael has spent thirty-five years photographing every country Drake visited in his lifetime. Francis Drake was the first Englishman to circumnavigate the globe [1577-80] and the first captain to survive a circumnavigation. Furthermore, Drake returned home rich!
Michael shares Drake’s story along with adventurous anecdotes about his own voyages. Through the stormy Strait of Magellan and through myriad remote islands in Indonesia where, in 1988, he was the first white visitor since the missionaries.
Michael has lectured to the Royal Geographical Society and the Ashridge Circle in Eastbourne (Britain’s largest lecturing organisation). In 2017, Michael gave six Drake lectures on a cruise ship in the Pacific Ocean and the West Indies.
Copies of Michael’s book about the voyage and the sailing qualities of Drake’s flagship, the Golden Hind, will be available throughout the festival for just £4. Each ticket to this event includes £2 off, so come along to this event and get a copy for just £2.
