Elizabeth Delo’s debut novel Becoming Liz Taylor is set in Weston-Super-Mare in the 1960s, 70s, and present day. It is the story of Val, a 72-year-old widow who spends her lonely evenings dressing up as the movie star Elizabeth Taylor and who one day, on a whim, steals a baby. Her actions seem to be a way of coping with the trauma and loss she experienced decades earlier as a young woman. In this talk Elizabeth will discuss why she chose Weston as the backdrop for her novel, and the childhood memories she drew on. Loss can have a huge influence on writing, and Elizabeth will talk about how she noticed her own long-buried grief coming out in her novel. This talk will explore the connection between memories and stories, and how writers – often inadvertently – leave part of their soul on the page.
