There are more than 800 First World War graves in over 240 cemeteries and churchyards across Somerset.
Each of the names on those gravestones has a story connected to it, a story of family and of tragedy, a story of life on the battlefield and of love on the home front.
The Death and Service project aims to shed light on the servicemen and women behind the names on these headstones. The series of books bring the long-forgotten names to life again, more than a century after they were lost.
Richard is a Somerset-based writer, historian, photographer and family historian whose work is dedicated to recovering the stories of servicemen and women who died during and in the aftermath of the First World War. Through his Death and Service project, he has combined historical research, genealogy and photography to create a substantial record of Commonwealth war graves across Britain.
Richard’s interest in military history grew from a broader passion for family history and photography. He has been interested in photography for more than two decades and has amassed a large collection of photographs and cartes de visite. His genealogical interests eventually led him to investigate First World War graves, bringing his two principal enthusiasms together in a project that is both documentary and deeply personal in its approach to remembrance.
